How to Vote Absentee or By Mail

Voting absentee or by mail is a great way to make your voice heard even before election day!

To request a ballot in the mail: Print and send this form to your city/township clerk, OR fill out this form online to request a ballot. We recommend you complete this process before July 14th.

To request an absentee ballot in person: Show up at your city or township clerk's office. You can find your clerk's office and hours of operation at this link. You can request an absentee ballot in-person any time up until 4 pm on Monday, August 3rd.

Once you have a ballot: Mark it, sign the return envelope, and return it by 8 pm on Election Day, August 4th. You can either:

Mail your ballot back to your city clerk's office. We recommend you do this before July 22nd so that it arrives in time.
Return your ballot in-person to a designated absentee voting dropbox, or to your city clerk's office in person, by 8pm on Election Day, Tuesday, August 4th. Returning your ballot in-person to a dropbox or to your clerk's office is the best way to ensure your ballot arrives in time to be counted.
You can also return a marked absentee ballot in person to be tabulated at an Early Voting site from Saturday, July 25th - Sunday, August 2nd, or at your Election Day Polling Place on Tuesday, August 4th.

How to Vote Early In Person

Any registered voter in Michigan can vote early in-person from Saturday, July 25th through Sunday, August 2nd.

You can find your early voting site at either the Secretary of State's website, or on Oakland County's early voting website. Below is Oakland County's schedule for early voting:

Saturday, July 25: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Sunday, July 26: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Monday, July 27: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Tuesday, July 28: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Wednesday, July 29: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Thursday, July 30: 12:00pm - 8:00pm
Friday, July 31: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Saturday, August 1: 8:30am - 4:30pm
Sunday, August 2: 8:30am - 4:30pm

Bring an acceptable form of photo identification to your early voting site. If you do not have a photo ID or forget a photo ID, you can still vote after signing an Affidavit of Voter Not in Possession of Picture Identification.

How to Vote On Election Day, Tuesday, August 4th

Look up your election day polling place online. You can vote any time on Election Day, Tuesday, August 4th between 7am and 8pm. If you're in line at 8pm, you are still eligible to vote.

You will be asked to show ID when you check in to vote. If you don’t have one, you can still vote after filling out a designated form. Your ballot will be included with all others and counted.

ID types you can use to check in are:

Michigan driver's license or state ID (may be expired)
Driver's license or state ID issued by another state
Federal, state or local government-issued photo ID
U.S. passport
Military photo ID
Photo ID from an educational institution
Tribal photo ID
